BBC World Service - CrowdScience, What’s the best way to breathe?

For the most part, our bodily functions are controlled unconsciously by our autonomic nerve system. You've probably heard of the fight or flight response when the body releases adrenaline to prepare for action.

For that's controlled by one branch of the autonomous nerve system, but the other branch is parasympathetic system. This can calm us down, slowing heart rate and breathing rate. Here is the thing, because breathing is something we have conscious control over, purposefully slowing down you breath can be a way of tapping into this unconscious system.

Breathing is very interesting because we have a sort of a key where ???(1)??? we can enter the function of our body. So by modifying the breathing faster we could also modify this part of nervous system and through this we can modify also ???(2)??? of internal organ.

2300

O.K. So by breathing more slowly, you can modify your autonomous nerve system, and ???(3)??? effects on other things in the body. But what kinds of thing?

2310

That's exactly true. For example, we can ???(4)??? down heart rating, we can reduce blood pressure but we also have something very impressing. We can reduce inflammation. We can reduce the accumulation of free radicals. So there are lots of little effects ???(5)??? something as simple as breathing slowly and deeply
