customs trivia

Osakacustoms, one of nine customs houses in Japan, refuses correcting incorrectexporter’s name in export permission record.
A customs broker had filed export declaration with the exporter’s name “Typocompany” but the exporter was actually “Type company”
missed spelling was in fact “o”and “n” for a company regularly exporting machinery
.
The customs broker company which had filed incorrect declaration, sent a manager to customs at the airport and apologized its mistake to the supervisor and asked after-permission correction of the exporter’s name.
The customs supervisor at airport asked Osaka Customs Head Office if he could correct export record or not and he received head office instruction saying“don't do that” and the supervisor followed it and exporter’s name remained incorrectly “Typo”.
This makes “Type company” impossible to get consumption tax refund because ofthe discrepancy between the payer of consumption tax and the exporter.
A misspelling of exporter’s name sometimes happens and could have happened inO saka customs many times. Yet Osaka Customs has been refusing to correct exporters’ names for decades with probably its own unique reasons.
