I walked around Sakura city, which is next to Narita city in which Narita International Airport located. I sometimes go to Narita Airport. I went there last Wednesday to attend Animal Quarantine’s explanation seminar concerning “The expansion of animal quarantine coverage is going to take effect from this coming November 1.” The seminar began in the afternoon and I took advantage of the free time in the morning.

Sakura is a castle town of Edo era and after the Meiji Restoration, an army regiment “Sakura Rentai” had stationed. The old army had cleared the castle tower and almost every buildings of the castle probably because of Sakura castle were the domain of a daimyu who had been a critical cabinet staff in their enemy clan Tokugawa shogunate. There is no castle remains except moats, and National Museum of Japanese History takes place in the premises.

I didn’t have much time to spend in the museum and run through it in one hour and 45 minutes, but it may need whole one day or more to appreciate the artifacts, documents, models and georamas from the ancient to the present.

There is no building tracing to the old daimyo days, but woods, moats and the space in the castle ruins offer the air of the days, and walking in the woods itself is refreshment.

In addition, the castle town in fifteen minutes on foot from the castle ruins retains old fashioned local Commercial Township. There are many temples of daimyou households.

If you stop overnight at Narita Airport for transit, spending this old castle city is not bad choice, so this writer thinks.
