But Deborah can't make any claims to that effects. No ???(1)??? says that her product can help treat gastro-intestinal conditions like the one she suffered from. That's because European Union regulations prohibit selling of any food product claiming to prevent, treat or cure any disease, physical or mental. In fact, even the word probiotics isn't allowed, because it denotes a positive impact. And as you've already heard, it's not a word Ted Dinan ???(2)??? he is also critical of some of the bacteria based product already out there on the market. They claim to be beneficial to our health. We hear about one of them in just a moment.

The danger of taking products that haven't been proven entirely effective in treating depression is that you could, you know, you could have somebody who is quite markedly depressed and needs some really effective therapeutic input, be it medication or psychological input, and they don't go down these lines and end up taking, you know, a product that seems to suggest the efficiency in depression. I think it's quite dangerous.

Do you think that it should be even tighter, then?

1813

I personally believe that it should. Companies, and marketeers in particular, will find ways around regulation and they will find ways of suggesting things without ???(3)??? Stating.  They clearly can't claim to be anti-depressant, but they can use vague terminology that implies that something may have anti-depressant properties. And of course lay public, and people going to health food stores and see, you know, products that, you know, imply an impact on mood. They obviously encourage to take such products. And also, you know, what is equally dangerous is, you know, you went to a health food store, and reality is they are modern day snake oil merchants, many of them. I mean 90% of that products in health food stores have no proven therapeutic benefits. Most of these have never been tested at all in relation to mood. In fact some of them haven't been tested in relation to anything. Not only they haven't been tested, but it's not even ???(4)??? many of them survive storage in the shelf that there's the live one when one ingest them and clearly our stomachs are full of acid and the question is do these bacteria always get through the acid and the stomach and of course the reality is many of them do not.
