When did people first learned to do this or a version of this? I asked chemist and historian Professor Seth Rasmussen of North Dakota State University in the U.S.

So that the earliest soap evidence that we have come from a Mesopotamian tablet dated to about 2200 BCE and ???(1)??? recipe can also be found in both Egyptian and Roman documents.

This is people writing about soap, it's not actually soap itself?

0731

Right. One problem with a material like soap, it's an organic compound, which means that is biodegradable, and so the likelihood of finding a sample today of soap made in the third millennium BCE is highly unlikely. In addition, if you try to analyse archeological samples, and you think you might have found soap, the likelihood is that that soap was not eventually soap, but they were organic residues that over time has ???(2)??? turned into a soap.

0802

I love the idea that something might have turned into soap over thousands of years

0806

In an Egyptian mummy, at one point they thought that they had detected soap but they ultimately realized that was a reaction over time of soda on the mummy's ???(3)??? the fat in the body that were generating this type of soap. ???(4)??? the consequence we are primarily having to rely on written historical records.
